Meet your brain
You've probably heard lots of things about the powerful machine that is the brain. Its impact goes far beyond what we usually admit. The first commandment of your brain is "You shall survive."
Your brain has your best interest at heart (so to speak), if your sole interest is survival. The problem is that, in our society, survival is far from being enough and doesn't really mean much anymore. Any change or any step into unknown territories implies situations which are different from what is right now, and so they are dangerous. Your brain knows your can survive in the current situation (because you have until now), but it fears anything else, so it will try to prevent change to happen.
You might not know something's wrong yet, but your mind is telling you: you're not using your potential, so you get bored, you have too many things to think about so you get distracted, you can't really achieve anything significant anymore because, well, maybe you're on the wrong path. But worst of all, you're so stuck in it that you can't see the way out, and that makes everything even worse. Your brain wants you to change something, but the way it's telling you makes it even more difficult to accomplish. Besides, since it's afraid of change, the mixed signals it's sending only bring more confusion. Confusion we could do without.

I used to struggle spending more than 5 minutes working on something if it was important in any way. Usually, the mind is conflicted because of all it has to do so it doesn't put itself in the best state to do one thing at one time. By being in survival mode, the brain is always alert, and exhausted, thus inefficient.
